Social Media Updates for Houston Businesses — September 2026
The platforms all moved in the same direction this month: reward original, made-for-you video and punish the recycled, samey stuff. Here's what actually changed, with the sources, and what it means for what you should shoot and run.
TikTok
TikTok pushed its algorithm further toward search. Videos now get matched to what people are actively looking for instead of being handed out mostly by follower count, and category alignment counts for more than the size of your following (TikTok). The same update downranks low-effort reposts, watermark-heavy clips and anything that reads as mass-produced, and favors original footage instead (TikTok).
On September 3 it also added interactive comments — audio replies, polls inside comments, and posting multiple photos in one comment (Easy 93.1). Content that gives people a reason to comment now has a little more to work with.
Instagram rolled out "Your Algorithm" to all English-speaking users — a panel where a viewer can see the topics Instagram thinks they like and turn them up or down for Reels and Explore (Brand Vision). It also shipped new creation tools: First Draft, which auto-assembles selected clips into a starting edit; per-slide carousel captions; and the ability to replace audio on feed posts and carousels (NapoleonCat). The cursive logo even got its first redesign in a decade.
Facebook's Feed (the Andromeda-powered discovery engine) now pulls up to half of what you see from accounts you don't follow, and weights original content filmed by the Page or creator over recycled video (Metricool). It also judges comment quality — how much a comment adds to the conversation — and leans on engagement like comments and shares over passive likes (SocialPilot). Social Media Examiner's 2026 rules for reach is worth a read if you want the deeper version.
Meta Ads
This is where the biggest shift for advertisers is. Meta's Andromeda ad system now groups visually similar ads into one "entity" before the auction, so a batch of near-identical ads competes as a single ad — creative variety matters more than volume of look-alikes (TheOptimizer). In that same analysis, brands testing 20+ genuinely different creatives a month reported markedly higher returns than brands testing fewer than ten.
Two housekeeping changes worth checking: the old placement checkboxes are gone, replaced by a "value rule" that can lower a placement's bid but can't switch it off entirely (AdMake AI); and since August 6 the device, hourly and frequency reporting breakdowns come back empty for accounts that never opted into the new reporting settings (Superwall). If your reports look thin, that's why.
What this means for what you shoot
Every one of those changes rewards the same thing: more original footage, in more genuinely different cuts. So this month:
- Capture 3–4 distinct takes per concept, not one clip recut five ways. TikTok and Instagram penalize samey content, and Meta collapses near-identical ads into one — variety is now a ranking and an ad-delivery advantage.
- Shoot real, on-location footage — your storefront, your team, your product in use — over stock or generic inserts. TikTok and Facebook are both explicitly rewarding video filmed by the business.
- Add a spoken hook that names the service and the city ("Houston real estate photography," "Katy pet grooming"). Both platforms lean on search-style discovery now, and a silent aesthetic clip doesn't get found the same way.
- Put a face on camera. With Facebook filling half the Feed from non-followed accounts, a 30–45 second owner walkthrough is well placed to reach people beyond your current following.
What to change in your Meta ads
- Add creative variety before adding spend. Four to six clearly different cuts from one shoot day will beat fifteen near-identical variants under Andromeda.
- Test the newer Instagram Reels ad formats (post-view ads and, where available, catalog overlays) — useful for listings and product catalogs (AdMake AI).
- Audit placement and reporting settings on each account this month, so empty breakdowns don't lead you to the wrong conclusion.
The through-line is simple, and it's good news if you already invest in real production: one good shoot day now stretches further, because the platforms are actively rewarding original footage cut several distinct ways. Common questions
What changed on the TikTok algorithm in 2026?
It moved further toward search-style ranking — matching content to what people search for rather than follower count — and it downranks reposts, watermark-heavy clips and mass-produced video while rewarding original footage.
How many Meta ad creatives should a small business run now?
More distinct ones. Andromeda groups near-identical ads into a single entity, so look-alike variants compete as one ad. A handful of genuinely different cuts beats many copies of one template.
What should Houston businesses post right now?
Original, on-location footage with a spoken hook naming the service and city, several distinct takes per concept, and a face-on-camera walkthrough — all of which the current TikTok, Instagram and Facebook updates reward.
