What Changed on Instagram and TikTok in 2026

If your posts stopped reaching people this year and you didn't change anything, that's the point. You didn't change anything. The platforms did.

Here's what actually shifted, in plain terms, and what a small business in Houston should do about it.

Instagram: sharing beats liking now

DM shares are the highest-weighted signal. When someone sends your post to a friend privately, Instagram reads that as far stronger proof of value than a like. Likes have quietly become one of the least important things that can happen to a post.

What to do: stop making content that's nice to look at and start making content people forward. A checklist someone sends to their business partner. A price nobody else publishes. A before-and-after that makes someone say look at this. If nobody would ever send it to another person, it's decoration.

Instagram is penalising reposts, hard

This is the one catching most businesses out. Instagram now demotes reposted content, and that includes your own TikTok re-uploaded to Reels with the watermark still on it.

Cross a threshold of roughly ten reposts in thirty days and an account can be excluded from recommendations entirely — Explore, Reels tab, Suggested Posts, all of it.

What to do: if you're making one video and posting the identical file everywhere, that habit is now costing you reach. Content needs to be made for the platform it lands on — different cut, different opening, no foreign watermarks.

The first three seconds decide everything

If viewers drop off before three seconds, Instagram cuts distribution. Open on the thing, not the run-up. No logo animations, no "hey guys." Text overlay on frame one, or someone talking directly to camera saying something with an edge to it.

Instagram reads your audio now

Instagram's system listens to speech in your videos and uses it to categorise and rank content in search. If you're a roofer in Katy, the phrase "roof replacement in Katy" should be spoken out loud, not just typed in the caption.

Carousels are quietly the best-performing format

Of every format on Instagram in 2026, carousels have the highest engagement rate — and they're the cheapest thing to make from a shoot you've already done. Every photoshoot should produce at least two.

TikTok now shows your video to your followers first

TikTok used to be genuinely follower-blind. That's over. New videos are tested with your existing followers first. If they don't watch, it doesn't travel.

What to do: a bought or inflated follower count is now an active liability. So is a follower base you attracted with content unrelated to what you sell.

TikTok raised the completion bar, and longer is winning

Videos now need roughly 70% watch-through to earn wider distribution, and the platform is favouring 60 to 180 second content. Shares and saves are weighted well above likes.

This reverses the advice most businesses still follow. A 15-second clip nobody finishes now performs worse than a 90-second piece that holds attention to the end.

One caveat: the US TikTok algorithm is still being retrained following the Oracle ownership transition, so distribution is likely to keep moving. Worth re-checking each quarter.

What this adds up to

Four things, if you only take four:

1. Make content people forward, not content people like.
2. Stop reposting the same file everywhere.
3. Earn the first three seconds.
4. Stop assuming shorter is better.

None of this requires a bigger budget. It requires the content being built for where it's going — which is a planning problem, not a filming one. That's what our management packages are for.

Common questions

Does Instagram penalise reposted TikToks?

Yes. Instagram detects re-uploaded content including watermarked video from other platforms and demotes it. Around ten reposts in thirty days can exclude an account from recommendations entirely.

How long should TikTok videos be in 2026?

TikTok is favouring 60 to 180 second content, with roughly 70% watch-through needed for wider distribution. Very short clips no longer have an automatic advantage.

What is the most important Instagram metric now?

DM shares. When someone privately sends your post to another person, Instagram weights that above likes.

Does Instagram use audio for search?

Yes. Instagram processes speech in video and uses it to categorise and rank content, so spoken keywords help discoverability.
